Melissa says…

15 12 2006

-By Melissa

Jason and I were checking out Haji Lane one Saturday when we chanced upon Niche. We had a short chat with Eileen and were inspired to join Niche in the local designers’ platform.   Quoted from Jason, “Like what Eileen told me, local designers’ produces great designs but most of us either lack the time or capital to start out on our own and hence, Niche is to the rescue!

The local design scene is booming and people are now paying more attention to local works We believe the local designers and Niche will make it big one day. Well, if we haven’t had faith in Niche, you wouldn’t be hearing all this now! Without the help of Niche, we would still be selling our products online and wouldn’t have had the chance to be recognized. Hence, we would like to extend our heartfelt “thank you” to Niche – Eileen, Rony, Jacky and Silas.

We strongly believe that Niche will grow into a household name for local designers one fine day. And we will be coming up with more great works too, not just accessories, so do keep a lookout for us!

Singapore Polytechnic FullStop interviewed Niche

12 12 2006

p1080642.JPG

Niche thank Mr. Gary, Valerie and Jeremy Ko for the opportunity to appear in SP’s FullStop.

A glimpse of the interview

Valerie(Reporter) : Please complete the sentence. Entrepreneurship is……

Rony: …something different! I dont like working for others. I prefer working for myself. My interpersonal skills have improved greatly as I meet new people everyday. Being friendly is important.

Huali: … tougher than expected. It is not what you find in lecture notes. You have to be daring at times.

Jacky: … definitely something different because I was an Aeronautical Engineering student at first. I believe Niche can gain popularity gradually as we try to be a cut different from the rest. It’s also about meeting deadlines, managing time and working with people.

Eileen: … like sowing money n fertilize with hard work & creativity. Then enjoy the blooming season. But when flowers wither, dont give up – because it’s just part of the flowering process.

WHAT “NICHE” MEANS TO YOU?

4 12 2006

Some people say Niche should live up to its name- that is, to be different. “You should sell products that other SG retailers dont have…” Well, that’s one out of a million ways to define NICHE.

Niche redefines the art of shopping. Shopping no longer means walking into 50 shops or struggling with 10 shopping bags or waiting for your turn outside the changing room. Dont you want to know who design the $500-pair of jeans? The meaning of the brand? Difference between collection 1 and 2?

Niche attracts a very special group of shoppers- the Opportunist, the Collector, and the Curious.

Aspiring designer is given the opportunity to be recognised; Adventurous fashionist is tempted to grab the one-and-only rare item; The Curious is in love with the red couch and conversation…

We want you to step out of Niche, bagged with valuable information and with the mindset to come back again. It is not just the cooling air-con, or the spotlights that create your shopping experience. In Niche, the people create the memorable experience.

What does Niche means to you?

Local Fashion 2: Addictive Cocaine

30 11 2006

Evon started the Cocaine shop (ilovecocaine.blogspot.com) in early 2005 to share her creations. Her accessories are one-off pieces. She gets her inspirations from things around her, and creates items that have a slightly masculine side to girlie accessories. If you like contrasting colors and and clashing designs, you will love Evon’s works!

Evon is currently studying in Nanyang Polytechnic’s Media Study.

Dong Feng Jie

They say that Tang Ren Jie belong to the olden days.  They say they found a place where the street had no limitation in expressing the oriental culture. They called it – Dong Feng Jie “

Rather than following western trends, Dong Feng Jie use the elements of the Chinese culture such as painting, calligraphy and symbol combining them with modern urban style in an innovative streetwear approach.

Designer Profile

Spark Tan was born in 1978, Singapore. He has been fascinated by illustrations and drawings since he was a kid. He worked as a freelancer in graphic design, illustration and multimedia platform for 2 years. Then he set up his design firm, ,dirtmedia in July 2003 and began to work on interesting works such as Red Panther, an online comic supported by 2005 Synthesis, Media Development Authority Singapore (MDA) funding scheme. His passion and interest is, of course, illustration. So dont be surprise to see his office full of storyboards, toy models, mascots, comic characters and animation stuff. Thats his personality.

Whenever I spotted a shadow, I would quickly slide down from the barstool, step over the wires, avoid hitting myself on the wooden table, and finally reach for the door…! Sometimes i think customers do feel intimidated by me as i rushed to the door…hahaha

Haji Lane Is Niche

23 11 2006

submitted-poster-for-niche-1.jpg

All four of us never heard of Haji Lane. That’s how BIG Singapore is.

In search for a perfect location, we walked from Bugis Street to Erskine Road to Ann Siang to Chinatown Town… and last stop- Bali Lane.

Just as we were about to head home, the sign “Closing down Sale” answered to our prayer! With some directions and guidance, we landed in No. 34 Haji Lane :)   -eileen
